Understanding Personal Spending Choices

We’ve all had moments where we see someone splurge on the latest phone, camp out for hours to grab a new gadget, or shell out big bucks for VIP concert tickets and wonder, "Why?" It’s easy to think, "That’s so unnecessary," or question their choices. Similarly, we might see collectors spend fortunes on dolls, action figures, or rare memorabilia and think, "What’s the point?"

But here’s the truth: we don’t really understand because we’re not the ones living their lives. We are simply observers, and what makes sense to us financially may be completely different from what fulfills or excites someone else.

When we judge how others spend their money, we often do it from our own perspective, without knowing the personal value behind that purchase. To the person standing in line for hours to get the newest smartphone, it could represent a love for cutting-edge technology or an investment in something that makes their day-to-day life smoother. To the concert-goer splurging on VIP seats, it might be the chance to experience a once-in-a-lifetime moment, creating memories they’ll hold onto forever. And to the collector who buys rare items, it might be about preserving a piece of their childhood or fueling a deep passion for their hobby.

The reality is, we all have things we’re willing to spend on that others might find frivolous. Maybe it’s expensive skincare, top-tier coffee beans, or travel. Whatever it is, these choices are personal, and the satisfaction they bring doesn’t need validation from anyone else. We are all different, and what brings happiness or fulfillment varies from person to person. Just because one person would never spend money on one thing doesn’t mean it’s wrong for someone else to find value in it.

It’s important to recognize that people are living their lives based on their own priorities and joys, not ours. Just as we wouldn’t want someone to scrutinize or criticize how we spend our hard-earned money, we shouldn’t be quick to judge others for their decisions. After all, we don’t know their full story, their reasons, or the happiness those purchases bring them.

So the next time you find yourself questioning why someone spends so much on a particular item, remember that what may seem trivial to you could be something deeply meaningful to them. We’re all entitled to spend our money in ways that align with our values, interests, and what brings us joy. At the end of the day, it’s their life, not ours.

In the same way, we don’t owe anyone an explanation for the things we choose to invest in. We work hard for what we have, and it’s up to us to decide where that money goes. Whether it’s practical or purely for pleasure, we’re allowed to spend in ways that make sense to us—and so is everyone else.

Let’s embrace the idea that it’s okay for everyone to live, and spend, differently.

au revoir. 😊
